my old garmin is knackered, all my maps on pc are really old and my phone could do with an update. So im going for a tx4 from memory map with maps loaded when I get abit of cash together. I really rate the memory map software and hopefully there gps devices will be just as good.

I may be being a bit thick here but new to the GPS tracks, I created a track using base camp, uploaded to GPS then pressed go, the track shows on the screen but no direction arrows to show which way to go on track, this was a problem when the track crossed itself ie I didn't know which way to turn without stopping scrolling out then working out which track to take, surely there is a way to show which way to go on a track with - arrows or such like as it shows in base camp before its loaded to the montana if so I cant see it can anyone help please?

A TRACK is just a series of individual plots joined together to make a line - ideal for off roads & trails.

But can be a bit confusing on the screen when the chosen way criss crosses around a bit.

A ROUTE will have directions, arrows, etc - just like a normal sat nav display.

You can convert either way - but if you convert a track into a route it always seems to make a mad version that takes you all over the place.

Not tried it yet.
But I would of thought you could add your own way points to a track you made.Max number of way points is 50 by the way.

On Garmin for trail riding you have to use tracks and just follow the line. If the line crosses another line, go straight. If it was a turn then there would be separation between the lines.

If you tried to follow point A to point B to point C it would only navigate along roads - it can't navigate along lanes.

Just follow the line - it works brilliantly. Before you go on your ride, check on Base camp to see which way you initially head (on Base camp you can see direction arrows).

Had a bit of a play with base camp. The track I used returns to the same starting point so about half way or the point I thought I would be starting the return I used the scissor tool to cut the track in half and renamed the two tracks so I can load them one at a time for me this solved the problem of crossing over tracks. In base camp I also gave each track its own colour though I do not know if the Garmin can display two different colour tracks at the same time.

I'm looking into getting hold of a Montana 600 just searching the internet for a good deal, unless someone here has one they no longer use ;)

I have seen one here for £263 without maps mind. Doesn't seem to bad a price for a new one, if you can source the maps cheaper.

How often do the maps get updated?

Might just wait for a used one. £175 does sound better as it might get a little roughed up anyway.

Have a look at www.navi-technology.co.uk Search for Montana (don't put in Garmin). In the results will be a Montana with maps for £299. Print the page and take it to your local Go Outdoors, and they will price match it plus 10%. The maps are 2011and if there is an offer for cheap 1:25k OS maps, it is expired!
Worked for me!!

At the moment, I prefer the Viewranger interface to the Garmin, but I may get used to it with practice

Mike
