Interesting feedback on the Alp 4.0. I've had one for two years or so, and it's superb. Also got a Serow, shod with Maxxis and AC10 knobblies for all the mud here in Wales. Alp had trials tyres when I got it - fatal in mud, and, yes very heavy when it's lying on top of you on a muddy slope. However I put Avon Distanzia tyres on about a year ago. Transformed handling on road, better than almost any other bike I've ridden, and it will still do green lanes - used it on Black Mountain and various other dryish lanes on Isle of Man recently. My mirrors fold in for standing up or loading in van. I'd planned to sell it when I bought Serow, but cannot persuade myself to part with it. Other bike is a vintage XL185. They are all different, but a big smile guaranteed on any of them. My Alp has a 46 rear sprocket, but I'll swap to a 48 now I've read this thread. Thanks for tip to protect rear brake cylinder.
Rob

Good to hear from other owners, thanks Rob

I bought one last month.

I can't believe how much fun it is. I've added a few bits and pieces to help me with the LDTs I'm doing.

Great bike, I'm really going to enjoy riding it. Can't wait to get to Derbyshire at the weekend and do some lanes.

Update for you folks,

The speedo definitely works now that it has been supplemented with the correct drive washer.

If you should hear a light high pitched squealing noise when riding then check out the chain roller guide, it should have two bearings with I think 7 balls in each, mine was noisy and only had two balls in one side :o , replaced the item today and the noise has gone away  If yours feels 'notchy' then replace it anyway, they cost less than £9.00 so why take the chance on it failing out in the sticks

I have had a mushroom headed vulcanised patch repair to the rear tyre after that 6" nail event, the hole inside the tyre looked as though it would eat away at the replaced tube.

I have also fitted a set of Apico handlebar risers, feels much better standing up on the pegs in the garage, yet to be tested this Sunday in the Peaks.

See you out there.

Hugh.

Hello,

I have just bought a Beta Alp 4.0 exactly the same as the bike in the photo at the start of this thread. Looking forward to collecting it on Saturday.

When I test drove it there was a strange noise coming from the chain area and it turned out to be coming from a round bearing wheel near the front sprocket. Once removed, the noise was gone. Is this part needed or can the bike be run without it I wonder? It does not seem to do much from what I could see.

Any other suggestions on good mods would be appreciated. It has quite old looking square tread trials type tyres and from looking on other posts I see the Avon Distanzia are recommended so may fit these.

Thomas.

Greetings Thomas,

The little roller is a fairly standard item and does not need to be a Suzuki or Beta part, but you do need one.

Mine simply required a full service which is easy enough to do, most parts are available from John Lampkin Imports, your local Suzuki dealer or a trial specialist such as Steve Goode.

As for mods; rear brake master cylinder cover as per Johnny's original post; handlebar risers; I fitted roller bearings to the swing arm pivot; new bushes to the dog bone; stanchion gaiters to the front forks with new bushes; 'O' ring chain and sprockets; brake fluids flushed; oil and filter replaced; flush hot oil through frame and clean the gauze filter; re-route the carburettor breather; carburettor sonically cleaned; air filter cleaned and oiled; heated handlebar and grips; new wheel bearings; and most recently I have replaced the clutch thrust washers which is a common wear point (I have produced a PDF & PowerPoint but I can not add it to the forum as I think that it is too large). The fuel level warning light wiring had been cut so I replaced the fuel tap for one with a reserve position.

I have a Michelin Enduro Competition III rear tyre and a Michelin Enduro Competition IV front tyre, both with HD tubes and clamps. They give good grip but I feel that the front tries to climb out of ruts by its side grips and the rear spits its way along, I normally ride with Michelin or Pirelli trials tyres so will probably change in the future.

Hope that you enjoy your bike and remember we are always here if you need guidance.

Hugh.

Thanks for the feedback - some very useful information.

Good to see that there is a forum with knowledge of these bikes and I am optimistic that it is just what I have been looking for. I will have to look into whether there are any groups of riders who go out in my area (south Durham/North Yorks) as despite years of biking I have never ventured onto the by-ways.

Thomas

Sounds like a plan.
