i take it you mean rim locks, id say yeh you need them to stop tyre spinning bit of a pain to fit sometimes when changing tyres but they do the job .

also are heavy duty inner tubes a must ?

Yes, if you get a puncture they stop the valve from being ripped out of the tube. When you have replaced 2 tubes due to damaged tyre they keep it on the rim allowing you to ride to the nearest safe place, 5 miles in my case

Racman,

Learning is all part of the fun - I tend to learn by my mistakes, in the last 18 months my tool kit has got bigger with each problem, usually with a pre cursor quote of

'B*ll*cks I've got that tool in the shed at home'

Never mind, and BrianS on here can sort wrenches for wheel nuts which will negate the need for me to carry round a half inch drive rachet and two huge sockets!! 8-)

just side tracking a wee bit, moving on to heavy duty tubes i run with continental 6mm thick tubes , about £26 not cheap but a puncture can ruin a good day laning ,if you are not running with rim locks do not tighten the valve nut right up to the rim , if the tyre spins it will give you a bit off movement on the valve stem, not ripping it at the base. in theory. :?

It depends what and we're you're riding. It would allow the tyre pressures to go further down without problems.

I'm not an expert.

Had a look at my bike today noticed I do not have tyre clamps fitted  Not noticed before as i've only recently bought it. Another job to do before the weekend
