If you fancy something different there's a bunch of ex french army Cagiva 350's on Ebay.

There's a bit of a cult following for ex british army MT350's as well - these are quite capable on easier byway's and even on tricky ones in the right hands. The MT 350 club has a lot of trailriding events.

Although a DRZ400 is over 33bhp, a restrictor kit is an easy mod. They are very reliable, not too heavy and relatively comfortable for road use. If you are commuting, I would go for an 'S' rather than an 'E' as it is more road friendly.

I've had XR250's and they're good, but a bit buzzy on the road and you have to 'dance' on the gear shift

Now got a DR350SE and it's a good bike, nice on the road with a 6spd box and a broad spread of power. I also have a XR400R and the chassis/suspension is streets ahead of the DR on the trails

Not much between the XR400 or DR350, but the XR400 just pips it...............but I do like the electric start of the DR350, that said my XR400 is a really easy starter

Better late than never John, the post was 3 years ago, so he's probably got a KTM by now....or packed up altogether ;)

I've got a xr400! It's great and easy to kick start! Does me well around Northamptonshire! A mate of one has a ttr raid, to be honest I think that's a better all-rounder since he's done a few 120 mile trips on motorways with ease.
