Hey guys, I've narrowed my choices down to these four bikes and I'd appreciate a more experienced take on which bike I should get? It needs to be under 33bhp. I would primarily be using the bike for commuting but I like to hit the lanes at weekends so it needs to handle the dirt too. Any help or advice is welcome, Thanks, zing |

We probably need more info to give useful advice. You need a bike that suits you, not one of our personal favourites. Are you big, small, stout or tall? What sort of commuting distance? What part of the world are you in to give us an idea as to whether you have level open lanes or difficult muddy or rocky nadgery lanes? Have you got a strong leg or would you prefer e-start or dual start? Do you like to do your own maintenance and repairs in which case a good support forum would be helpful. Best of luck with the investigation - that's a big part of the fun Brian |

Most XRs are enduro, and have (poor) directlighting and no indicators. The 250 with a 6-speed is actually better on the road than the 5-speed 400. DR350S is proper trail bike that's equally good on road and rough. Even the newest is now quite old though. I know nothing about the Yams, but they've got an enthusiastic following. |

Like you, Zing, when I started out I was new to trailing but I'd ridden bikes since I was 16. I moved to Devon 3 years ago and was amazed by the number of lanes near me. I bought one of Brian's TTRs, one that he'd just re-furbished, and I've not looked back ever since. I have ridden in groups having Suzuki DR350s (heavy) and Honda XRs (nice bikes) but in reality, since I've got to know the ins and outs of my TTR I'm glad I got it. TTRs are really stout machines, easily serviced by amateurs, cheap to run, have 6 gears, electric & kick starts, decent lights, good brakes, plenty of clearance - smashing. In fact, I trust my TTR because it's better on the trails than I am and has got me out of sticky situations amazingly. It has never left me stranded either. You may think I'm biased - and I admit that I am. Martyn |

Got myself a TTR also, it's been fab so far and like has already been said the parts are cheap, and working on the bike is a breeze. |

Hey guys cheers for all the advice so far! I'm 18, 5'11" slim build, fairly long legs My commute distance is only about 7 miles each way, but in the summer I can cover half of that on byways (I'm so lucky I know!) I live in beds/bucks/herts area so most lanes are flat, grassy and muddy. I'm a keen mountain biker so I like to think I have proportionally strong legs but I'm not that heavy so weight isn't on my side but I've coped with every kick start I've come across though so I'm not that phased by it. I'm in the latter stages of a full rebuild of my Honda xr 125 so I'm mechanically competent so yeah with the right advice I would quite happily maintain it myself. I've ridden enduro style bikes since my cbt when I turned 16 (granted only 50 and 125cc) so I am fairly confident and experienced enough at trail riding Hope this helps you to help me ^^ |
