I have had a Garmin Etrex Legend for about 5 years now which works well with Memory Map. I have always used it on Track setting which creates a "bread crumb" trail of where you have been which you can then download to Memory Map and print off or e-mail. The other way around is a bit more of a chore but not much; that is when you trace a route on Memory Map with your mouse and then download the track to your Etrex and follow the bread crumb trail when on your bike.

I have had a RAM handlebar mount and found it to be brilliant! The Etrex has never come out of the mount accidentally even when I've dropped the bike down a rocky climb or dunked it in a river crossing. That reminds me that the Etrex Legend is waterproof (it floats!) and pretty much bomb-proof. They do a newer version (looks identical) which has a more accurate / sensitive chip in it - see here....

You should make sure that you get one with a Europe / UK base map because even though you won't need the map on "Track" setting (you just follow the line) it is handy when you're on the roads.

It's the monochrome screen model which is really easy to read on the bike.

I'd give it 8/10

Mag

NB - always take a paper map as back-up ;)

when you say compatible with MM what exactly do you mean?

If you want OS mapping with your position shown on it, you've got three choices.
1)Satman 10
2)RA adventurer
3)PDA with GPS antenna and memory map

If you want actual compatibility you've got number 2 and 3 from above.

However, something like GPS babel can convert a MM route into a track that a garmin etrex or quest or whatever can show but you don't get the basemap behind.

You can pick up a RA NAvigator reasonably cheap off of ebay and download the MM application. If you've already got the MM maps this is the best way forward. If you've got to shell out for maps, then look at a mobile phone running viewranger

I've got the RA fitted behind the headlamp, and all the 1:50k and 1:25k for the UK and France plus the aerial photos and road map. On top of that it's a pukka sat nav, so if you need to head back to the van, you can get to the road, turn off MM and navigate using the proper navigation tool

Good thread on it here:

SatMap 10 is compatible with memory map.

It is a superb bit of kit.

I will be posting a full report on it next week, but I took one out last week, turned it on at 10am and at 10.30pm (12.5 hours) the battery had only dropped a single bar from 4 (lets say 1/2 run down at worst). This is a rechargable lipo battery. It also comes with a cradle to take three AA's as a back up. During this 12 hours the unit was on GPS and on full brightness.

It kept track all day. Downloaded the route from mm5 no problem. You can also access a route planner and route share online via their site.

I had a PDA running mm5 before, which was fine and ran off the bike for power, but in comparison it was cumbersome (in otter box) and occasionally the power connection played up and we lost the use.

Satmap have a deal for TRF members at 20% discount on all their range of stuff.

Things like the interchangable screens are a bonus, when they get scratched etc. Satmap sell three replacement screens for £20.

Its a bomb proof, waterproof unit. If its dirty just wash it in the stream or under the tap. Dont even need to turn it off. The bike mount is excellent as well. Really easy.

Best gadget i've ever used.

SB

If you go the Road Angel route then this thread might help http://devongtrf.activeboard.com/forum.spark?forumID=124986&p=3&topicID=20410554

I have succeeded in loading the memory map OS map onto the RA SD card but demented in my attempts to transfer a route overlay onto the OS. If anybody could list the steps I would include them in my will.

First check:

a) you have exactly the same version of Memory Map on the PC and MemMap Client on the RA - they MUST be the same if you want the transfers to work smoothly.

b) Have you installed ActiveSynch on the PC and, if so, is the RA connecting OK?

If the answer to both of these is "Yes" then how far are you getting before it goes pear shaped?

I am assuming you read the thread I linked to ;)
