Greetings,

Here are three more.

For Stockport look for;

For Derbyshire;

For Staffordshire;

Do n't forget that although a route may be shown as a BOAT, etc, it could still have a TRO operational and so be illegal to ride.

This thread is a useful resource but suffers from obvious problems. Surely the TRF is now big enough that it could embark on a project to create a national database? A largish task I admit to combine all this local authority info into one giant map that would show instantly what the members really want to know - where the green roads that are currently legal to ride are, where the ones not currently legal due to TROs are and where the ones that are legally disputed are. Clicking on them reveals details of the terrain, width, difficulty, gates, animals, damage, usage level, problems, details of TRO or legal dispute, will the TRF back us if we ride it, etc, etc.
This would allow us newbies to get out riding rather than having to wait for someone with specialist knowledge to be available and have the inclination to take us out! I presume it would also make for a good resource for the national body, groups, etc. The ability for ride leaders to simply paste in the names and date when people rode each lane would seem to be potentially useful data for future legal difficulties to show usage, which seems to be important. Once up and running it should be a fairly simple job for each groups ROWO to keep his area up to date?
I'm struggling to understand how the TRF can realistically claim to be 'conserving green roads' if it doesn't even have a database of them. A concise database of the entire UK network based on a map would surely give the national body and it's lawyers a massive advantage over local authorities or other groups we may find ourselves in discussion with or courtroom opposition to, quite apart from being massively helpful to the membership! I suggest this could be done in much the same way as the genome project as we must have many retired or otherwise time-unchallenged members who could take on an area of the county each and build it up piece by piece once the basics are in place.

This is a link to the Essex interactive map. One of the best ones that I have come across. You can untick all the boxes and then tick the byway box for the Essex byways in all their glory.

I recently spoke to Barry Cornelius who maintains http://rowmaps.com/ and the process involved in collating up to date information from the various councils is insane. There is an obscene amount of red tape, and he has to make freedom of information requests to some. Some of the councils continually claim not to have digital versions that can be shared.

If for example you wanted the definitive map for Suffolk you'd have to book an appointment to view it in person, in Ipswich. That's ridiculous in 2016.

I'd suggest that if the TRF were to start a campaign to make this information more freely available, that Barry would be an incredibly helpful person to consult. http://www.barrycornelius.com

Greetings,

As colleagues have already written this is not such a simple topic mainly because of all the 'red tape'.

If we look at the Peak District alone, although routes are shown with BOATs not all BOATs are open for vehicular access, Roych; Chapel Gate; Leys Lane are three examples, they are still BOAT status but have a TRO preventing recreational motorists from using them.

We live in a blame culture and that creates more problems, if I give you information and it is incorrect for what ever reason then in theory you might be able to make a financial claim against me. Run leaders are constantly at risk and we seem to be covered in a cloud of almost fear because it is a grey area.

Some, many, routes are on lanes that are not classified in anyway so nobody can say what their legal status is. The anti motorist brigade, who by the way read and log our messages, would claim that we should not use them until the legality is proven but they conveniently forget their beginnings were led by breaking the then Law at Hayfield :!: Once the route is proven to be Legal then they try to get a TRO imposed to prevent our use. Selfish :idea:

I have ridden the routes in Derbyshire since 1973 and the Lake District since 1964, back then nobody bothered so long as you were respectful, now unfortunately society seems to have changed and seems more selfish. Too many people with self interest in too small a geographical area :!:

Get in touch with the Groups if you want information.

East Sussex CC have an excellent interactive on-line map together with a regular (weekly?) TRO page that explains what the situation is on any lane, path etc.
They do react quickly as I pointed out they hadn't shown that two wheelers were exempt from one particular TRO and it was corrected within a couple of hours!!!

A lot of this is down to the sterling efforts of JP1, and others in Sussex TRF who have built up a good relationship with ESCC Highways.
Especially helpful as we have so few lanes anyway.
