This thread is a useful resource but suffers from obvious problems. Surely the TRF is now big enough that it could embark on a project to create a national database? A largish task I admit to combine all this local authority info into one giant map that would show instantly what the members really want to know - where the green roads that are currently legal to ride are, where the ones not currently legal due to TROs are and where the ones that are legally disputed are. Clicking on them reveals details of the terrain, width, difficulty, gates, animals, damage, usage level, problems, details of TRO or legal dispute, will the TRF back us if we ride it, etc, etc.
This would allow us newbies to get out riding rather than having to wait for someone with specialist knowledge to be available and have the inclination to take us out! I presume it would also make for a good resource for the national body, groups, etc. The ability for ride leaders to simply paste in the names and date when people rode each lane would seem to be potentially useful data for future legal difficulties to show usage, which seems to be important. Once up and running it should be a fairly simple job for each groups ROWO to keep his area up to date?

I'm struggling to understand how the TRF can realistically claim to be 'conserving green roads' if it doesn't even have a database of them. A concise database of the entire UK network based on a map would surely give the national body and it's lawyers a massive advantage over local authorities or other groups we may find ourselves in discussion with or courtroom opposition to, quite apart from being massively helpful to the membership! I suggest this could be done in much the same way as the genome project as we must have many retired or otherwise time-unchallenged members who could take on an area of the county each and build it up piece by piece once the basics are in place.

Good point I'm looking to get a Montana 600 so I can get out more.as I never get time when a ride is posted.but I've not a clue how to work one and find green lanes which I can ride,I wouldn't know where to start.if it's a green lane is it just like a sat nav, plan route of lanes and go??!how do you know if you can use them??
