Interesting, although it's just another rival for TRAILWISE to some extent.
Not a bad idea in any sense but who is it aimed at? Presumably trail riders?Yes (because I am one) but also probably of use for 4wd vehicle users
Also, what is a "byway of unknown status" (no such thing exists in law) and if it is primarily aimed at recreational vehicle users why include non vehicular routes such as restricted byways? It is a way that is tagged as a byway in OpenStreetMap (probably before BOAT/RBs) so we currently know it is probably a BOAT/RB but not which - a good excuse to have a look and update!
My reasoning on including RBs was show all relevant information. I find it interesting and think it will be of interest to the trail riding/4wd community.
Adding info on traffic regulation orders would be very helpful.Agreed & I plan to do this in due course.
I guess the real problem with this kind of resource however is not in uploading info onto a map etc but in keeping that info current when so many things are changing all the time.Exactly, this is the reason that a wiki-map like OpenStreetMap is the right way to do it. More people are likely to contribute to data held in the public domain.
The byway map is regenerated by me around once a week and picks up all updates from OSM.
Wikipedia is a great example, as is the OSM update video here..
http://vimeo.com/2598878Still, if the info can be kept upto date and correct (remember there are serious legal implications for vehicle users if you get it wrong) then its another useful tool in finding legal routes.
Thanks for sharing with us.
Cheers
Richard
