http://bywaymap.com

i've created this map and am developing it to make it a useful way to find BOATs, RBs, unsurfaced roads
i'm very interested to get feedback, or any help in updating the source data (which is freely available in openstreetmap)

enjoy :D

the links to openstreet maps provide incorrect info for access allowed on RB's.

the map should include unsurfaced public roads + ORPA's

Including routes that have a valid byway claim would be usefull.

Are there any mechanisms to update/correct the map?

All this information is in thepublic domain - collating it onto one map is a great idea - thanks for your efforts

Interesting, although it's just another rival for TRAILWISE to some extent.

Not a bad idea in any sense but who is it aimed at? Presumably trail riders?

Also, what is a "byway of unknown status" (no such thing exists in law) and if it is primarily aimed at recreational vehicle users why include non vehicular routes such as restricted byways?

Adding info on traffic regulation orders would be very helpful.

I guess the real problem with this kind of resource however is not in uploading info onto a map etc but in keeping that info current when so many things are changing all the time.

Still, if the info can be kept upto date and correct (remember there are serious legal implications for vehicle users if you get it wrong) then its another useful tool in finding legal routes.

Thanks for sharing with us.

Cheers

Richard

Why reinvent the wheel, Trailwise will have already more data in it, be more well known....sorry, can't really se the point in it.

The bywaymap is a less clunky format than trailwise. It's handy as a "route planner" resource - something you can seamlessly browse through rather than have to do repeated searches on.

Ideal if you want to plan longer point to point trailrides over multiple days for example.

Like Trailwise though it's only as good as the info put into it.

can you expand on this? - the OSM wiki can then be updated - I'm happy to help with this

the map should include unsurfaced public roads + ORPA's
agreed - I'm looking at the current data in OSM on this & how to get the data in without copyright issues

Including routes that have a valid byway claim would be usefull.
completely agree - can we talk more about how best to do this?

Are there any mechanisms to update/correct the map?
yes - going to http://openstreetmap.org/ , logging in (I use a linked Google login to make it easy) and then go to the 'Edit' tab
the BOAT/RB status is stored in the 'designation' tag against a 'highway' to indicate legal designation - more info - http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Unit ... ines#Byway
the bywaymap.com website is updated from the latest OSM data by me around once a week and any updates you make will be picked up then

All this information is in thepublic domain - collating it onto one map is a great idea - thanks for your efforts
great - i hope it will become an even more useful resource with more development by me and constantly improving OSM data (there are currently around 5 byway related edits a day on OSM)

Yes (because I am one) but also probably of use for 4wd vehicle users

Also, what is a "byway of unknown status" (no such thing exists in law) and if it is primarily aimed at recreational vehicle users why include non vehicular routes such as restricted byways?
It is a way that is tagged as a byway in OpenStreetMap (probably before BOAT/RBs) so we currently know it is probably a BOAT/RB but not which - a good excuse to have a look and update!
My reasoning on including RBs was show all relevant information. I find it interesting and think it will be of interest to the trail riding/4wd community.

Adding info on traffic regulation orders would be very helpful.
Agreed & I plan to do this in due course.

I guess the real problem with this kind of resource however is not in uploading info onto a map etc but in keeping that info current when so many things are changing all the time.
Exactly, this is the reason that a wiki-map like OpenStreetMap is the right way to do it. More people are likely to contribute to data held in the public domain.
The byway map is regenerated by me around once a week and picks up all updates from OSM.
Wikipedia is a great example, as is the OSM update video here.. http://vimeo.com/2598878

Still, if the info can be kept upto date and correct (remember there are serious legal implications for vehicle users if you get it wrong) then its another useful tool in finding legal routes.

Thanks for sharing with us.

Cheers

WIKI states that no motor vehicles are allowed on RB's. The legal situation is that motor vehicles aren't allowed on RB's without lawfull authority. Some RB's have legal mechanism's that grant the public lawfull authority to use them with motorvehicles.

the map should include unsurfaced public roads + ORPA's

Every highway authority is required by law to mainain a list of streets maintainable at public expense. This is a public document. Many authorities have an online LoS - search digital maps on TRF forum for a list.

Including routes that have a valid byway claim would be usefull.

The register of definitive map modification orders (which will include byway claims) is a publicly available document - again, many are online.
