I noticed that ViewRanger gets mentioned quite a lot on the forum, so I decided to download it to my phone.

I maybe being a bit thick, but I just seem to get walks and cycle routes?

How do you select Green roads BOAT's etc. ?

Are there any legal lane maps for the Macclesfield, Marple, Buxton area?

Thanks in advance for any help.

No have just done the free bit?
Is that the trick, to by the OS maps?
I managed to find some of Hugh's maps, I suppose they'll make more sense with the OS maps bought!

Thanks, anymore tips would be greatly appreciated.

Greetings,

The best prices (and service) on maps I have always found have been from a company called; dash4it

http://dash4it.co.uk

They often make special offers which we generally notify on this Forum.

The latest OS 1:25000 scale are the best in my view as they also have a "key" so that you can download the map to your computer or phone. You need to instal a free piece of software from OS Maps. You can then choose the OS map to be used.

Not looked recently, but the cheapest Viewranger specific OS maps (don't know if you can convert genuine OS maps to Viewranger, but no doubt Hugh will know) are from eBay, but in my experience are a couple of years out of date - not too much of a problem for us. When I got mine, Viewranger was doing a promotion, and the VR maps were only a couple of pounds more than the eBay ones, so no contest.

I have found the best way to use view ranger as a free app is to join a ride and record the route, you can then play it back and follow it and also share it.

You have to logon to myviewranger and select the categories in My Account.

Sadly Viewrange show green roads as greenlining/off-roading. I have complained about this. How about joining me?

Does Viewranger work as a GPS for road biking too, ie can you input postcodes?

Greetings,

I have not used ViewRanger as a Sat Nav for finding my way to a location, only used to record routes/tracks or to share routes via internet with others. It will work with free maps but it is best with OS maps.

I think that you have to take care not to use too many 'way points'. I have bought OS maps from Dash4it.com

There is a free OS maps app for 'phones via which you can download the latest paper map onto your Android and/or iPhone 'phone. The latest paper maps have a code on them which has to be typed into the application, not too difficult - well I figured it out

As a 'phone SatNav I use a product called "Here" which I have found comparable if not better than those systems fitted in many cars, best bits are that it is free and map updates are too :idea: Why pay £250 for a car update, seems ludicrous to me, take a look at;

https://maps.here.com/?x=ep&map=52.9667 ... ,10,normal

I have used the system on Windows and Android 'phones, it will work offline once you have downloaded the relevant maps. I have also used it on trips to France, America, Canada, and on city breaks to Prague and St Petersburg.

The HERE suite will also download travel information for bus and trains.

Hope this helps.
