What is the best way to learn the green lane routes of Surrey ( or anywhere?).

which Apps or satnavs can assist a rider in following a route that he hasn't ever ridden?

Thanks

Get yourself some local OS maps and mark up the lanes that are legal to ride, or I'm sure someone in you TRF group will mark them up for you. Then plan a route, I use a Sat Map Active 10 as my gps but see a lot on here rave about the Garmin Montana 600. The go and have some fun.

Enjoy
Simon

I live in Surrey and use a Garmin Montana, but I also carry maps when I go trail riding as a backup in case the Montana fails. Also, if I need to change my route - e.g. if a lot of time is lost due to breakdown or accident - I find it easier to plan a revised route by looking at large maps rather than a small satnav screen.

I buy my maps from Dash4It, if you were to buy OS Explorer maps 145 & 146 you'd find enough lanes to cover a winter day's trail riding in Surrey, and it would cost you less than £12 delivered http://dash4it.co.uk/catalog/product/view/sku/OSE145

Once you've got the maps, you could mark them up by reference to http://www.qwerf.com/greenlaning/?county=surrey or better still, join the TRF and go to the Surrey group's monthly meeting in Ripley, where they will have a set of marked-up maps for you to reference, further details here https://forum.surreytrf.org.uk/viewtopi ... c962fbdc33

Whilst I prefer to use a dedicated satnav rather than a smartphone, many riders use the Viewranger app on their phones. If you search this forum for 'Viewranger' you'll find loads of useful threads.

Hope that helps :D

Hi Simon. That's all very helpful. Thanks.

I've downloaded the viewranger app and will think about a sat navigation.

Am a paid up member now of TRF and will be a member of Surrey group.

Will try to tag onto a ride out too .

Cheers

Charles

The great thing about veiwranger is you can join a ride, record it then follow the route on your phone anytime you want afterwards.

Thanks, Gdas 24, Sean, Simon

Can you get a holder/ mount to stick a Garmin Montana on an Exc ?

How do you plug a phone or gps into the bike electric system?

Thanks

I can only comment on the Satmap, comes with a great bike mount, waterproof case which is a tad bulky, but is also VERY waterproof and the battery life is phenomenal so no need to wire into bike electrics. I can be out all day and only use 1 bar of the rechargeable battery
