Noramlly it would be marked byway or restricted byway, so it could well be okay unless a temporary closure which would be affixed to teh sign.

Post up the location or join your local TRF group.

Grid reference would be handy....
Byway is used a generic sign in my experience could mean anything esp. in Herefordshire!! Bless 'em

If the route is a Byway open to all traffic, then it will be signed as a 'Byway' (sometimes with a red arrow)

If the route is a Restricted byway then it will be signed as a 'Restricted Byway' (sometimes with a purple arrow)

Some BOATs may have an order (TRO) on them to stop motor vehicles using them, in which case they will still be signed as a byway, but with the flying motorbike in a red circle sign (if you know what i mean?)

Hope that helps :)

In the absence of the word "restricted" the traffic sign serves to facilitate motorvehicle access for the public.
