I have just sold my tm300 enduro due to spending too much time at the fuel pump on the trails.
I have had allsorts of bikes xr400, crf450r, gas gas 450, drz400. But unsure of what to get next I keep looking at the wr250f or crf250x 06 onwards but think it may not be big enough for the road work. A 2 stroke is out of the question as the are rough on the road so its a thumper.
More and more people are getting ktms nowadays but whats the reliability of them like compared to the crf/wrf.
What bikes do you have for the trails.
Thanks.

Take a look at a husaberg fe 450, you can get a good 2006 for about £2000. good around performer, very reliable, easy maintenance, made by ktm! And yes, ktm are very good and reliable too

I did look at the husaberg 450 but are they not too much on the tight trails though.

If you have a Kawasaki KX500 I very much doubt whether anything else will be too much for you!

I've owned/commuted/trailed on:
Yam DT125 (still got it too, 21 years later)
KTM 125
Suz DRZ400
Suz GZ125
KTM 525
Yam WR400
Yam YZ426
Yam WR450
Husky TE310
Yam WR250R

out of all of them, the WR250R has hands down been the best all round machine for everything: economy, comfort, docile usable power, pillion comfort, maintenance (26000 mile valve shim intervals!)

To be fair, the Yams have all been super low maintenance and it's my brand of choice.. I'd advocate anyone at least take a look at a WR250R (if you're local, come and ride mine) before turning down a relatively small engine.. I often find it's the quickest bike for a trail, because it doesnt spend any time going from roosting to lying on the floor and back again..

Believe me the 500 is very very quick but it'll only go as fast as you pull the throttle back. Great bike though.

I have decided on a wr250f it's an 04 but well looked after and at a very good price. But cannot get my head round why it doesn't have a front brake switch for rear light but has one on rear brake. I don't know how it's passed previous mot's as there is no advisory about the lights.
I am surprised by how much power these 250s have far from my old xr 250 I had when I was younger.

If you are going for the WR250f (and I've got to say I can see why, I love mine) it might pay to think about spending just a wee bit more and going for the newer (08 on) ali frame model. It is a much nicer ride on the twisty stuff.

I've bought the 04 wr and if I get on well with it I will buy a newer aluminium framed model. Also I'm going to see how much use I will get from it due to family and work commitments. (missus wants a newer caravan ) so depends on budgets too but I'm looking forward to getting out on it.
