Having decided I am struggling with trail riding the 690, I am going to put more road friendly tyres on it as I love riding it.

So......I am looking for a KTM 350 EXC or possibly a Husky FE 350.
Preferably in the high £3k to low £4k region but could be squuezed a tad higher if I don't have to add bits and ideally within easy reach of the south east.

Hi David .I can't help you with a purchase but I had until recently a KTM 350 excf (omg) what a great bike.I only swapped it in because I had a thing for a husky 2 stroke .get one bought you'll love it.I know if I could have 2 bikes there would be a 350 four stroke in the stable.

David are you sure you wouldn't get on better with a 450,SOHC nicer more solid power delivery not as racy as the 350.

Hmmm. Now you're muddying the waters but in a positive way.

I rode me nephews FE 250 yesterday and was surprised how rideable it was but feel it needs more oomph for the 80% road work we have to do.

I have no problem with power as that is what my right hand is there for. It was bike weight that has got the better of me. I had already started down the 500 suggestion but the guys on the KTM forum (who know my limitations) headed me down the 350 route.

I had no problems with my WR450 and that was when I first started - not that I have improved much since sadly.

I didn't realise there was that sort of difference so will spend some research time. Thanks Tony as I had found a nice (once it has been de-blinged a bit) 350 not too far from you at Austins Motorcycles.

I've got an immaculate trail ridden only '15 Husky FE450 being transferred from a dealer in Wales (who I know) to their Sussex branch tomorrow.
Price, type of bike etc etc tick all the boxes so i will report back.
Thanks for the suggestion Tony - I may owe you a beer.
I had no problem riding my old WR450 so there shouldn't be much difference apart from the bike being 12 years newer but me being 7 years older.

Think you'll love that,Ive had a 350 and a 450 the 450 is just much much better and not just because Im nearly as old as you are David the 450 is much nicer it'll cruise on the road comfortably at 60-65 go slow when you need to and still show a 350 a clean pair of heels when you want to be a Hooligan.

Many would say (including myself) go up to the 500 EXC, same power as the 450 but with more torque. The 500 is not a snappy as the 450 so I have been told.

The 500 is what I would get next... (or a 300 2 stroke)

Thanks Tony and Pete

I think the 500 may be oomph to far nowadays so the 450 appears to be an ideal solution but I still have to ride it.
The first off road bike I tried was a 530, all day at an Ady Smith day, and I did love it but, although I have improved techically slightly, my body has got a bit less repairable so some discretion is required.

I was also trying to get something more local as travelling to get a bike or car can be a pain so sometimes all the boxes get ticked.

Try a 6-days KTM, 250 or 350 as they have a longer 6th gear (than standard bike) that allows you to cruise at 50-60 under low revs but with all the fun still in the lower gears.

I'll happily ride on the road on my 250 6-days in 6th so the 350 would be just as good and you get a more comfy seat on the 6-days.
