Post subject:  Kent / East Sussex routes

Hi all, I'm on the blag, for some routes for a planned event running out of the Crowborough area in the summer, so I'm after some routes, or even better someone to show me around so I can route accordingly as there will be 3 groups ( Big bike easy, Bike bike not so easy and one for those on the EXC type bikes ).
I've plenty of time to sort it and will be planning a few reccy trips, I'll post up when I'm going and on what bike, just in case anyone wants to tag along.

Thanks Stewie ( Surrey TRF )

Hi Stewie

Happy to show you around East Sussex in a few weeks time - midweek or weekends. We can get you an escort party and take a couple of extras I'm sure.
As you probably know, there aren't a huge amount of lanes from Crowborough unless you add in the lower East Sussex Lanes. You might (will) need someone better than me to show the Pevensey Marsh lanes though as I hate them so don't bother venturing onto them. The whole lot is doable in a day but we all have a slightly different way of setting up our routes - also depends if they are one way or return later (one way will be a much shorter day).

Just as a warning, there will be heavy use the first weekend of August as it's Eastbourne LDT so around 100 bikes out plus Sussex TRF are having an event built around it I think.
It may not be ideal to bracket the weekends either side either if there will be a load of you. Keeps the locals happy (less unhappy).

If you PM me your email address I can email you OS map extracts with the lanes marked up as a guide - it is not definitive and also depends on any current TRO's (fortunately minimal, even in winter).
ESCC link to their Byway map and TRO list: https://www.eastsussex.gov.uk/leisurean ... -closures/ Beware that some Byways shown don't actually exist or have been permanently TROd.

You will need the Kent TRF guys for their patch but I don't think there is much Crowborough way to link into Kent without a lot of road work. We have always headed up to Wrotham ar somesuch.

Another option would be to only do Crowborough area and then head Brenzett, Ham Street and Ashford direction for some on Romney Marsh and around.
Again, check against Canada Heights programme for their LDT date(s). They do one or two per year in Kent.
A Kent guy probably best on that unless some Sussex chaps have routes set up.

Cheers
David

Hey Stewie. You can download my East Sussex Roadbook here http://www.myfirstrally.com/roadbook.html (those on adv bikes might find that a bit of fun), a couple of East Sussex GPX routes can be found here http://www.myfirstrally.com/rbgpx.html

Hope it helps, have fun.

Cheers
Dan

I can help you out with some routes around kent. You will need to have a permit for some of the lanes around Snodland.

Thanks for the help and links, been out doing some reccys, not to much that will trouble a 990, the rocky climb just to the east of Crowborough may be fun if its wet, some of the ones to the south ( Nr Arlington ) don't look like they've been ridden in a while, but there not signed as TRO,( some were seasonal ) so just checking with the council.
Anyway were out and about this weekend 21/22 so if you see us, stop and say hi.

We're riding them as often as we can Stewie and we ride them all (such as there are) :D
The trees and undergrowth down here are on Steroids and grow like the clappers.
As you've seen, some are too low for horse riders now and I doubt MTBs or walkers bother so it's down to us.

I know it's getting close, but I've been out a few times on the Horse Eye Level ( sorry don't know the byway name ) there's a rectangle made up of road and track, I was coming in from the lower r/h corner, the track that runs south of the drainage ditch, I didn't get very far up it when I came across a large hole ( looked like 4 x 4 damage ) as I was already in a deep rut, and the hole was full of stagnate water, I made the decisions to turn back ( not that easy with the 990 in a rut ).
The question to the local East Sussex riders is, is the byway like that all the way around, or is the one on the upper side ( Snapson's drove ) of the river any better, as we need to get from east to west and the byway further north ( Marshfoot lane ) has a temp closure.
Also I've made a route and have the GPX but not made it public, if any of the local guys or gals would be so kind as to give it a once over and maybe suggest and additions or stops or any permissive ways or UCR's that I've over looked, that would be great,if you post up or message me with your email, I'll send you the GPX, just to say that I have done the 108miles of the route on my 990 with K60's on.

Thanks Stewie.
